The logo of new kit sponsor, KMI Club “Be Inspired” was just the ticket as our boys were inspired to a well deserved win in the opening fixture of the Chiltern Youth League Under 12’s Division 2 Season.

The team fell behind after just 3 minutes of the league season as the Wilstead number 9 slotted home expertly after some neat passing on the edge of our box.

Westoning fought back with the kind of never say die team spirit this group has become renowned for and soon started to dominate proceedings. On a windy day, the weather was making it difficult to get any rhythm going but gradually chances were created and we were unlucky to hit the cross bar. When we did get a sight on goal, we found an equally inspired goal keeper in good form to

Then, with half time fast approaching, a moment of pure brilliance. Some quick passing allowed us to break forward with a three on three situation. Harry Flavell, our fiery and skilful centre midfielder, looked up as if to pass a through ball but saw the keeper of his line. In a flash he floated a beautiful dipping lob in to the back of the net from 25 yards! Wayne Rooney – eat your heart out!

Half Time: 1.1

The second half saw the boys play with the wind behind them and this proved to be an advantage as we controlled proceedings and laid siege to their goal. Shot after shot was blocked but Wilstead had some good moments of their own too, playing on the break they remained a threat.

High drama occurred as the game looked like it was heading for a draw. Wilstead broke quickly in to our penalty area and their forward rounded Liam, our goalie, and shot towards an unguarded net.  Another attacker followed it up and bundled it in and to our relief, he was off side and the referee blew his whistle. Unbelievably, the referee pointed to the penalty spot, adjudging our keeper to have pulled their forward down. Highly controversial and some teams would have lost their composure but yet again we behaved impeccably, no complaining to the referee or moaning was heard.

The Wilstead attacker looked cool and composed as he ran up and struck a powerful right footed shot.........just wide of the left hand up right!!!!!

We were looking dangerous every time we attacked but the opposition looked equally so as the game opened up. Both teams were playing with tremendous spirit and were looking for the winner. Then came the decisive moment of the match. A flowing move saw the ball held up by Bradley, our centre forward, on the edge of their box. He took a deft touch to his left and played an intelligent ball in between two defenders for our right winger Joe Rushby. He blasted the ball towards goal and their keeper parried yet again only for Joe to recover and stroke the ball home from 6 yards. 2.1!

All that remained was for the boys to stand firm for the last few minutes to close out a hard fought victory and start the season off in “inspired” form!
