Winter-proof your skin

Well, it seems that we’re finally in the depths of winter. Those minus temperatures and threats of snow could be proving havoc for your skin, and whether you’re already experiencing the cold snap or are bracing yourself for the Arctic conditions heading your way it’s important to take action. You need to winter-proof your skin to lessen the harsh effects of the weather, and it needn’t be that difficult to achieve the desired effect.

First up, moisturiser. You need a heavy-duty face cream because the icy wind buffeting your skin can leave it dry, chapped and sore, so opt for an ultra-rich cream that ideally comes with SPF included—it may be cold but there’s a lot of sunshine around too, and even in winter the sun’s rays can prove damaging. Ideally incorporate a night cream into your routine for extra skin-saving potential, and you’ll want to take extra care of your lips as well. Always carry around a lip balm or tin of Vaseline, and if you’re mad enough to be exercising in this cold weather a slick of Vaseline on your face can provide an extra layer of protection against the wind (weird but true!).

It may seem counter-productive at this time of year, but regular yet gentle exfoliation can make all the difference. Dry skin creates a build-up of dead skin cells which can block pores and make your skin even more uncomfortable, and if you want an extra glow make sure to indulge in a face mask from time to time. Don’t forget your hands either—the cold temperatures can still get through even the thickest of gloves to leave your hands chapped and sore, so always carry around a tube of hand cream and generously re-apply throughout the day.

As for the rest of your body, make sure to smother yourself in body lotion after your bath or shower to lock in moisture, and if you really want to treat yourself it’s the perfect time to indulge in a facial. As long as you pay extra attention to your skin at this time of year you’ll be able to winter-proof it to regain your glowing complexion, helping you enjoy the season without compromise.
