The Power of Scent

Of the five senses that we possess, the most powerful (yet often the most underrated) is our sense of smell. It’s the only one directly hard-wired to the brain and can have a powerful impact on our mood as well as our memory, with smells seeming to have an innate ability to transport us back to a previous time. A familiar scent can give us a quick and intense reaction and can bring a forgotten memory bubbling to the surface, but our sense of smell can have more practical applications as well.

In prehistoric times our sense of smell could easily mean the difference between life and death—we used it to sniff out danger, and to a lesser extent we still do that today. Our sense of smell is important in deciding what food we eat (we all know when food’s gone off) but it can also help us enjoy a meal as well, with much of the pleasure of food coming from its scent. And, with pheromones being key indicators of sexual attraction, our sense of smell can even help us choose a mate.

There are plenty of holistic benefits to scents too, with a lot of essential oils having recognised healing and mood-boosting properties. You can choose different scents depending on your mood, situation or the tasks you need to achieve, with lavender and chamomile being good for relaxation and rosemary, peppermint or lemongrass being ideal if you need a burst of energy to finish that all-important project.

And, of course, let’s not forget the power that a good perfume or aftershave can have—perfumes can be highly evocative and we all know how we react to a good whiff of aftershave, with the right options easily making all the difference. Scents of all kinds can be incredibly powerful and can be used for a variety of different means, so don’t underestimate this most important of senses and make sure to treat your nose to scents you’ll adore.
