Today, 8th March 2011, is International Women’s Day; a day which marks the economic, political and social achievements of women. Hundreds of events take place throughout March, all around the world to celebrate this.

International Women’s Day began, 100 years ago, fighting for equal rights for women – to have the right to vote, to go to university, to work and have a family, generally to have more choice. It has now long been recognised that significant changes have been made over time and women are much more equal within society. So International Women’s Day has changed from a reminder of the negatives to a celebration of the positives.

Each year women’s groups and organisations choose themes to reflect local issues. So while many people think there is one theme per year, in fact each country/group selects a theme that is relevant to them. This year however there is a global tie – it is the 100th International Women’s Day.

Some of the other themes being celebrated around the world today are:
“Women and men united to end violence against women and girls” United Nations, Global
“Strong leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality” Status of Women, Canada
“Women’s voice and influence” Doncaster Council, UK
“Bridging the generational gap” Welsh Assembly Government, UK

Did you know..
International Women’s Day is now an official holiday in 27 countries worldwide! Many of these see men honouring the women in their lives, with flowers and small gifts; a bit like Mother’s Day but for all women..we’re thinking the same – why isn’t it a holiday here? We can dream.
