Christmas may be well and truly behind us, but the after-effects of all that indulgence could still be well on display. If one of your resolutions was to get to the gym to shift those excess pounds you’re probably starting to wane a little, and with good reason too—exercise is hard work and it can take a long time to see the results, but did you know that there’s more to exercise than fat loss?

Well, you’ll probably have some idea of the additional benefits without really knowing the details, so here you have it. Yes, whilst exercise is an essential tool in the battle of the bulge, it can do far more for your body than helping you shift the flab. It’ll keep your heart healthy to help prevent heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure (as we all know, prevention is better than cure), and is great for circulation as well as your immune system to ultimately keep your body happy.

It can be great for your skin as well—regular exercise can improve skin luminosity to give you that healthy glow, and it can be the perfect mood booster too. You’re bound to have noticed that you feel happier and more awake after a workout and that’s because exercise releases endorphins (the body’s natural feel good chemicals or “happy hormones”) into the blood stream to improve mood and happiness levels, making it the perfect antidote to those winter blues.

So, if you’re starting to lose your motivation to get out there and exercise, just think of all the additional benefits you’ll be able to get from it. There’s far more to it than meets the eye and it can transform your mind as well as your body, so what are you waiting for? Be your own personal trainer and get on that treadmill or start pounding those streets, NOW! (Well, when you’ve finished work, of course…)
