It's been a couple of weeks since the clocks went back and we are not plunged into darkness around 4pm. Unfortunately this is the way of the world, but for some people the winter months can be incredible difficult, with the increase of S.A.D - Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Seasonal Affective Disorder affects 2 million people in the UK. SAD is not fully understood, but the causes are believe to include the change in amount of daylight, especially during the winter months. Light stimulates part of the brain called the Hypothalamus which controls moods, appetite and sleep. Serotonin is the happy chemical our brains release and this could be disrupted during the winter months resulting in low moods, loss of interest, drowsiness and emotional highs and lows.
One of the treatments of SAD is to get as much light as possible, using special lights which replicate the suns rays, and exercise is always great for low moods.
